Abstract: Advanced control design and evaluation for disturbance rejection is needed to improve rotorcraft handling qualities in turbulent environments including shipboard operations, urban operations and firefighting. There are hundreds of rotorcraft operating in such turbulent environments. Currently, Advanced Rotorcraft Technology, Inc. (ART) is developing an advanced control design and analysis environment. The tool is initially being used to design a disturbance rejection controller and satisfy Aeronautical Design Standard-33 handling qualities requirements for the XV-15 aircraft, a tilt-rotor predecessor to the V-22. ART is proposing to apply the use of this control design and analysis environment to other platforms, including the V-22, H-60s, CH-53, H-1s and unmanned aerial vehicles such as the Firescout to provide disturbance rejection and improved handling qualities.
