Hypersonic Alumina Infrared Domes Keywords: Missile domes, hemispheric, ogive, transparent alumina, MWIR optical properties, hypersonic Abstract: The company has developed a revolutionary capability to cost-effectively produce hemispheric and ogive IR missile domes from transparent alumina. The MWIR optical properties(transmission, scattering), thermal shock resistance, and rain impact resistance are equivalent to sapphire. Unlike sapphire, fine grained alumina displays isotropic properties. Ogive domes reduce drag, allow increased sensor angle of regard, and provide increased capability to flythrough rain. Methods for grinding and polishing ogive domes, and for metrology of deep concave shapes are under development. Fully polished hemispheric domes are being fabricated for advanced testing. The company seeks application partners for dome testing and qualification. Also sought are commercial and DoD partners to exploit the unique material properties (high transmission, hardness, strength) and shape forming technology for existing and future applications.
